Justice for HANK! The Friendliest Deer in WV Killed.

Justice for HANK! The Friendliest Deer in WV Killed.
The Issue
The deaths of animals like Hank the deer, Peanut the squirrel, Little Buck the deer, and Fred the raccoon have sparked growing public concern and national outcry.
In each of these cases, state wildlife agencies such as Departments of Natural Resources (DNRs), New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), and related departments have come under intense scrutiny for decisions that many believe were handled with unnecessary force rather than compassion, discretion, or modern humane judgment.
Wildlife agencies exist to protect and steward life — not to default to destruction when more humane solutions may exist. Increasingly, communities across America are calling for these organizations to reassess outdated policies and approaches that appear rigid, impersonal, and disconnected from the values of the people they serve.
Wildlife situations are complex and should be evaluated case by case, not managed through robotic enforcement or blanket procedures that ignore context, community input, and humane alternatives. This includes ensuring that those entrusted with these decisions are equipped not only with technical expertise, but also with the emotional intelligence, ethical judgment, and situational awareness required for responsible stewardship of living beings.
Our treatment of the most vulnerable reflects who we are as a society. Policies must evolve. Training must improve. Accountability must exist. And compassion must guide action.
Hank deserved better. And so do the many animals who depend on us to protect them.
We are calling on the Beckley District of the West Virginia DNR to formally commit to the following reforms by the end of 2026:
✅ Create a “Hank Protocol” requiring non-lethal options be exhausted before any animal is killed
✅ Revise outdated policies to prioritize rescue, relocation, and rehabilitation
✅ Mandate humane wildlife training and emotional intelligence education for all officers
✅ Establish partnerships with wildlife sanctuaries and rehab centers
✅ Implement transparency through public incident reporting
✅ Create an independent review process for controversial cases
✅ Engage the community in wildlife stewardship education
A more detailed Open Letter will be sent to the Beckley DNR, WV. Wildlife agencies exist to protect life — not treat it as disposable.
📢 Demand accountability. Demand reform. Demand humanity.
If you agree, share this post and let the Beckley DNR know we are watching — and we expect change.
