Justice For Gerald McDonald
The Issue
Update - February 29, 2012
Our family received the coroner's report back in the mail about two weeks ago. She ruled the manner of my grandfather's death as a 'homicide' and concluded that his death in relation to the attack is significant and "cannot be considered a coincidence." Please keep supporting us. <3
An assault that leads to a death is considered murder. Gregory Smithies, his juvenille daughter, Savannah Smithies and Joey Glasser need to be charged with manslaughter.
On September 20, my father was walking our three dogs when a verbal altercation took place with a young-adult couple over "sharing the road". The young man then threatened my father, so he walked away and proceeded home. The couple returned with the woman's father and her little sister and had baseball bats in tow (my brother attended high school with the young woman and knew that my father was his father and therefore knew where we lived). They smashed two of our vehicles, my mother was punched by the father, Gregory Smithies and the two girls attacked my 80-year-old grandfather after he simply came outside to tell them to our property (the property my dad owns, pays taxes and a mortgage on). He was punched and kicked repeatedly by the two girls, while the boy, Joey Glasser repeatedly hit my grandfather with his aluminum baseball bat in the torso, legs and back. Police arrived at the scene and arrested the four assailants at gunpoint. They were released later that evening from custody. The next day, my grandfather went to his family doctor, was given some generic painkillers and told to rest.
For two weeks, he was bloodied up, bruised and suffered lacerations and cuts all over his body.
On October 4, 2011, exactly two weeks after the altercation, my grandfather passed away in is sleep from a heart attack.
His family doctor says that there is no doubt in his mind that the assault provoked stress on his heart that led to the heart attack that ended his life.
My grandfather was a healthy man before this and had never suffered from anything other than a little bit of hypertension here and there. In fact, he rode the Harley Davidson that he owned and painted the house just weeks prior to the attack. Three days before the attack, him and my grandmother drove to Kelowna to attend my cousin's wedding.
There is no doubt in any of the minds of my family members that this savage attack on my elderly grandfather caused his death. If it wasn't for the actions of this terribly violent family, my grandfather would still be here.
