Justice for Geneviéve and Teraiya : Wrongfully Jailed in Jamaica

The Issue

In October 2024, Geneviéve Sanoussi and Teraiya Stapleton, two 21 year old university students from the UK, travelled to Jamaica expecting a simple trip. Instead, it turned into a nightmare. According to The Jamaica Gleaner (November 1 2024), both women were arrested at Sangster International Airport after allegedly being found with several packages of cocaine hidden in footwear.

The same report states that one of the women, shocked and confused, reportedly said under caution:

“What? I feel like screaming! Tony gave them to me.”

This detail strongly suggests they were set up and manipulated by a man they trusted, rather than knowingly carrying anything illegal.

Both women were offered bail of J$500,000 each and have been required to remain in St Elizabeth, reporting to police three times a week. More than a year later, the Jamaican justice system has still not prioritised their case, and after the recent hurricane in Jamaica, proceedings are expected to face even further delays.

These young women are not drug traffickers. They are victims of deceit and exploitation. They deserve fair treatment, legal support, and compassion.

We are calling on:

  • The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the British High Commission in Jamaica to intervene, ensure their safety and legal representation, and push for a fair resolution and safe return home.
  • The Jamaican Ministry of Justice to urgently review the case, complete all pending forensic processes, and ensure Geneviéve and Teraiya receive a fair and timely hearing. This could happen to anyone. Their lives have been put on hold because of another person’s deceit, and every day spent waiting is another day lost to injustice.

Please sign and share this petition to demand action now. Let’s make sure Geneviéve and Teraiya are not forgotten and help bring them home.
