Justice for Fury: Calling for Urgent Reform in Veterinary Care at Pets at Home & Vets4Pets

Justice for Fury: Calling for Urgent Reform in Veterinary Care at Pets at Home & Vets4Pets
The Issue
To: Pets at Home Group PLC, Vets4Pets, and Institutional Investors
From: Justice for Fury – a campaign led by the Khan family, dedicated animal advocates, and concerned members of the public, acting in the public interest with public support
Why We’re Taking Action
Fury Khan was our beloved family dog, whose tragic experience under the care of Vets4Pets Leamington Spa was the catalyst for us beginning our campaign, Justice for Fury. Fury’s story revealed deep, systemic failures within the Pets at Home and Vets4Pets brand names — failures that disturbingly are continuing to harm pets and devastate families across the UK.
Since March 2024, Justice for Fury has campaigned tirelessly, and in that time, countless individuals and families have bravely come forward with similar stories of mistreatment, misdiagnosis, misconduct, negligence, injuries, and even fatalities at Vets4Pets clinics, most of which operate inside Pets at Home stores.
We fully acknowledge that many Vets4Pets clinics operate as franchises, but it must be recognised that they carry the Pets at Home name and operate under its policies and profit models — promising “Complete Care” but too often delivering heartbreak.
It’s time for accountability.
Corporate Care Model Under Scrutiny
Pets at Home publicly claims, “We Are For All Pets.” Yet sadly, many of us have witnessed a very different reality — one where profit appears to come before transparency, affordability, and care.
In 2024, Pets at Home reported £105.7 million in profit, with Vets4Pets contributing over £52 million to this total. This is a thriving corporate entity, not a struggling one.
Yet pets in urgent need of treatment are often turned away unless full payment is made upfront, forcing owners into heartbreaking decisions. This is not due to a lack of available care, but because profits are prioritised.
Pets at Home owns Vets4Pets outright and operates a corporate structure that sets pricing, targets, and performance measures shaping how care is delivered. Many Vets4Pets clinics operate as franchises, but all work within this framework — one that too often places profit before veterinary judgement.
Pricing Transparency and Medication Mark-ups
- Prices for veterinary procedures and medication vary widely, even between nearby clinics, and many practices do not make prices publicly available. This leaves pet owners in the dark until faced with unexpected bills.
- Prescription fees can be as high as £37, with many owners paying premium prices just to ensure their pet receives immediate treatment.
Concerns are currently under formal investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) regarding practices encouraging upselling, including unnecessary or higher-margin treatments. - Corporate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) may be influencing clinical decisions, raising serious questions about whether care is driven by medical need or financial targets.
- In-house veterinary pharmacies often apply mark-ups far exceeding online alternatives, with little clarity or choice offered to owners. When treatment decisions are influenced by profit margins, trust in veterinary care breaks down.
We Call for Immediate and Meaningful Change
We, the undersigned, call on Pets at Home Group PLC, Vets4Pets, and their institutional investors to implement the following reforms without delay:
1. Independent Investigations Into Complaints
- Launch a transparent, external review panel to investigate allegations of malpractice or neglect.
- Include neutral veterinary professionals, legal experts, and animal welfare advocates.
- Publish findings publicly.
2. Enforce Clinical Care Standards Across All Clinics
- Mandate minimum care, ethics, and training standards for every practice — regardless of ownership model.
- Monitor compliance independently and report breaches.
3. Create a Public Complaints and Reporting System
- Empower pet owners with a clear, accessible way to report negative experiences.
- Ensure concerns are addressed with transparency — not ignored or buried in bureaucracy.
4. Provide Meaningful Support for Affected Families
- Offer proper avenues for redress, including apologies and fair compensation where harm is found.
- Recognise emotional and psychological trauma caused by negligent veterinary care.
5. Audit Profit-Driven Policies
- Review internal incentives, sales targets, and care-speed expectations that may pressure staff to compromise care.
- Prioritise pet welfare over shareholder returns.
6. Commit to Transparency and Ethical Reform in Pricing and Pharmacy Practices
- Ensure full pricing transparency across all clinics, empowering owners with clear, upfront costs.
- Cease any policies encouraging upselling or unnecessary treatments.
Review in-house pharmacy mark-ups to guarantee fairness and affordability. - Ensure veterinary professionals can prioritise care without pressure from profit-driven KPIs.
7. End the Silence and Engage Publicly
- Acknowledge the scale of public concern.
- Engage directly with affected families, professionals, and the wider public to rebuild trust in veterinary care.
This Is Bigger Than Fury — But Fury Is Where We Start
Fury Khan’s name now represents every animal failed by the system. We refuse to allow this to continue — not when lives are at stake, and families are left to grieve without justice.
As long as Pets at Home profits from the Vets4Pets brand, they bear responsibility for what happens under that name. Accountability cannot be outsourced.
We Stand Together — For Every Animal, For Every Family
We call on:
- Pets at Home leadership, including CEO Lyssa McGowan and the entire Board, to take immediate, public, and lasting action.
- Institutional investors — including Schroders, Vanguard, and Fidelity — to demand ethical, sustainable business practices that prioritise care over capital.
- People in the UK and around the world to sign this petition, stand with us, and demand better veterinary standards, pricing transparency, and accountability.
This is more than a petition. It is a movement. It is a stand for families who should never have to suffer in silence.
