Why this petition matters

Started by Anthony Zakrzewski

We, the concerned patients of Dr. Paul Quarantillo and citizens of Morgan County, have been in shock since receiving letters learning he would no longer be with WVU Medicine as of June 30, 2022.  For many of us, we have been longtime patients because of his genuine compassion and dedication to our long-term well-being.  Dr. Paul, along with his wife, Dr. Pam were in private practice in Morgan County for nearly 30 years until they joined WVU Medicine. They are both locally grown providers who trained at WVU in Morgantown. Most of their patients were thrilled they chose not to move to North Carolina to practice and signed contracts with WVU Medicine.

A large majority of Dr. Paul's patients decided to follow him and drive the 25 or more miles of a windy two-lane Route 9 east to Martinsburg.  Many of us are new to WVU Medicine and I would think that the largest healthcare system in West Virginia would be pleased to have the new patients.  Not only for the visits to his clinic but all the ancillary services (lab & radiology services) he ordered on his patients as well as the specialty provider referrals.  Not to mention the word of mouth that has been spreading in Morgan County since both Dr. Pam & Paul joined.  Over the last several years, WVU Medicine finally expanded into Morgan County with the opening of the Family Medicine-Berkeley Springs clinic of Dr. Amanda Michael and Dr. Pam Quarantillo.  Yes, our county is much smaller in population in relation to Berkeley and Jefferson County, but the health system was starting to make end roads into a county that has been strongly managed by Valley Health for more than 30 years.

Many of Dr. Paul's patients are older/geriatric aged patients with multiple health conditions.  Why have so many of his long-standing patients followed him, it's because of his patience, empathy, compassion and the fact that he takes time to really listen to his patients and treat them with respect, not a number.

What are we asking of WVU Medicine's leadership - to ask questions of why local leadership really chose not to renew his contract and then speak personally to Dr. Paul as he was given no specific reason for this shocking assault on his career.  If there were legitimate performance issues, was a plan discussed with Dr. Quarantillo so he could correct and improve issues?  Given the physician shortage nationally, the cost of recruiting and retaining good providers, and the fact that WVU Medicine is the premier health care provider in the state, we would think you would want to help your providers be successful.

As mentioned above, we are a small, tight knit community who are confused and angry with this decision.  If this is how WVU Medicine treats their providers, it does not give us much confidence that they truly care about the patients.  This decision may have lost any future attempt to expand and grow in our county.
