Justice for Dr. Abhaya, Protect Her Parents, & Stop Harassing all Whistleblowers

Justice for Dr. Abhaya, Protect Her Parents, & Stop Harassing all Whistleblowers
The issue
To:
The Hon’ble President of India, Droupadi Murmu, New Delhi, India
On the night of 8 August 2024, after a gruelling 36 hour shift, young postgraduate doctor Dr. Abhaya was raped and brutally murdered inside R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata, India. Her only “crime” was courage, the courage to refuse complicity in a corrupt Health system. For standing by her oath as a healer, she paid with her life.
A year later, on 9 August 2025, Dr Abhaya's grieving parents were brutally beaten by police during a peaceful march to demand justice for their daughter. Her mother suffered serious head injuries.
Meanwhile, doctors across West Bengal who dared to protest this injustice are facing daily harassment by local police. The very frontline healers who save lives are being treated as enemies for demanding Justice and accountability.
Why this matters
The World Health Organization has recognised violence against women and violence against healthcare workers as dual global emergencies.
India’s Supreme Court itself has acknowledged the crisis by constituting a National Task Force (NTF) in 2024 to address violence against doctors, a measure prompted in large part by this very case. Yet, despite local, national, and international outrage, justice continues to be cruelly denied. A young doctor lies dead, her grieving parents have been brutally beaten by police, and those who dare to resist corruption are relentlessly harassed and intimidated.
We Demand
- A transparent, time bound judicial inquiry into the murder of Dr. Abhaya, free from political interference.
2. Immediate security and protection for Dr Abhaya’s parents, Mr & Mrs Debnath.
3. An end to police harassment, and violence against peaceful protesters, Doctors and other whistleblowers.
4. Accountability for Police brutality during the peaceful protest of 9 August 2025.
5. The NTF’s aftermath, stating that although safety for medical professionals was promised, its solutions have been piecemeal and fail to tackle underlying systemic failures or gender-based violence.
