Justice for Brynnlee: A Call for Bail Reform in Amarillo, Texas
The Issue
A Life Was Taken. A Family Was Left Behind. Our Community Deserves Better.
On January 1, 2026, 15-year-old Brynnlee Hampton's life was taken in an act of violence that forever changed the lives of her family, friends, classmates, and our entire Amarillo community.
While Brynnlee was laid to rest, the individual accused of causing her death was granted a $500,000 bond and released from custody pending trial.
For Brynnlee's family, this was another devastating blow. Instead of feeling protected by the justice system, they were forced to watch the person accused in her death return to the community while Brynnlee will never return home.
To make matters even more heartbreaking, Brynnlee's mother was not notified before his release, despite the importance Texas law places on keeping victims and their families informed when they have requested notification. Families who have already suffered the unimaginable should never be left to discover such life-altering news after the fact.
This petition is not about deciding guilt before a trial. Every person accused of a crime is entitled to due process under our Constitution.
But victims matter too.
Families matter.
Community safety matters.
When someone stands accused of taking another human life, the decision to grant pretrial release should reflect the gravity of that loss. A family should never have to fear encountering the person accused of killing their child while waiting months—or even years—for justice.
We are calling upon the judges, elected officials, and justice leaders serving Amarillo, Potter County, and Randall County to strengthen local practices by:
• Requiring the highest level of scrutiny before granting bond in homicide cases.
• Giving greater weight to community safety and the emotional and physical well-being of victims' families when making bail decisions.
• Ensuring every victim's family receives timely notification before any defendant accused in the death of their loved one is released from custody.
• Increasing transparency by requiring judges to clearly explain the reasons for granting bond in homicide cases.
• Working with state lawmakers to advocate for stronger laws governing pretrial release for defendants charged with causing the death of another person.
Brynnlee's life cannot be measured by a bond amount.
She was a daughter.
A best friend.
A teammate.
A classmate.
A young girl with dreams, laughter, and an entire future ahead of her.
Her chair is empty.
Her family will celebrate every birthday without her.
Her friends will graduate without her.
No court order can undo that loss.
This petition is about more than one case.
It is about every family who may one day experience the unimaginable.
It is about restoring public confidence in a justice system that should protect victims as fiercely as it protects the rights of the accused.
We ask our Amarillo community to stand with Brynnlee.
Stand with her mother.
Stand with every family who has buried a loved one because of violence.
Let Brynnlee's name become more than a tragedy.
Let it become the reason change finally happens.
Justice for Brynnlee.
Protect Victims. Strengthen Accountability. Reform Bail.
