Justice for Barney! Stop killing animals for rabies testing!

Justice for Barney! Stop killing animals for rabies testing!
The Issue
Barney was a sweet and gentle dog with no history of biting. He was being microchipped in preparation for his rescue pull and transport to a foster home. Unfortunately, during the procedure, he accidentally bit a staff member at the Clayton County animal control. This employee is known for being rough during microchipping, which likely frightened or hurt Barney, causing a reaction. Despite this incident, Barney had shown himself to be incredibly friendly with people and was eagerly awaiting a new home. The rescue organization was still willing to take him, and a foster family was ready and waiting.

Instead of being given a second chance, Barney was killed in a decision that we believe was unnecessary and avoidable. The staff and animals are supposed to be vaccinated against rabies, and vaccines can be given to people without testing the animal involved.
Moreover, humane and effective antemortem tests exist, like Dyne Immune Rapid Live Rabies Latex Agglutination Test, which has been available for nearly two decades. This situation calls into question procedures used in instances like this and highlights a need for more humane, evidence-based approaches to handling animal incidents.
It should be pointed out that, last December the nearby Fulton County Animal Shelter took a humane approach when a dog named Loki bit a child visiting the shelter. Like Barney, Loki already had a placement lined up. Instead of beheading, the Fulton County Animal Services quarantined Loki, and he was adopted on Christmas Eve! A similar happy holiday ending could have occurred with Barney, if Barney had been fostered on Valentine’s Day, which was what the foster family had planned.
This Clayton County shelter kills all sorts of dogs by jabbing them in the heart without prior anaesthetic. The shelter is run by police, and sometimes police dogs who allegedly don’t behave are dumped here and killed. Please sign and share this petition to end intracardiac injection at Clayton County.
🐾K9 Officer Served Us and Then Euthanized in Silence?
Clayton County, Georgia — Retired police K9 Kona, once a working dog with Clayton County law enforcement, was reportedly sent to animal control after at least one "alleged" bite. Not long after, K9 Kona was, according to animal advocates, tragically and inhumanely killed under distressing circumstances, and his service deserves justice, not a formal End of Watch.
K9 Kona was injected via intercardiac injection while in a kennel.
Earlier video showed staff giving him treats with Kona showing no aggression.
We animal advocates raised concerns about the lack of public notification, the method of euthanasia, and the fact that K9 Kona was essentially thrown out in the trash.
Clayton County Animal Advocates asked for information through public information requests and essentially received nothing in return.
There are so many questions but so few answers.
Will K9 Kona ever get justice or will he just be one more statistic out of Clayton County Animal Control?

⚖️ DISCLAIMER: Everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
The tragic fate of Barney and Kona serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for change. We call upon Clayton County animal control, and all similar facilities, to review their policies and ensure that all dogs are given fair treatment, a thorough investigation of incidents, and access to all possible tests and options before making the irreversible decision to euthanize.
It was completely unnecessary to behead Barney after he accidentally bit a staff member while being microchipped. Yes that bite was severe but the staff and dogs are supposed to be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccines can be given to people without testing the animal. Furthermore, there are humane, point of care antemortem tests like the Dyne Immune Rapid Rabies Latex Agglutination Test developed nearly 20 years ago.
Barney was a sweet and gentle dog who had no bite history. He had been at the shelter for 22 days and was being microchipped before heading to his new home. Why wasn’t he quarantined after the bite and a full behavioural assessment done on him over ten days?
I ask that animals be treated with kindness and respect, and are no longer mutilated and dismembered or killed for any medical testing or any reason. Please strive to be a no kill shelter that does everything you can to have a happy outcome for as many animals as possible. The dog was petrified of these people and a rescue was ready to take Barney in!
Please sign this petition to demand a change in protocol, ensuring that other dogs like Barney are treated humanely and given the second chance they deserve. Together, we can push for the adoption of humane, validated testing procedures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
