Justice for Baby Arshid: Demand PMO Intervention for Fast-Track Trial and Child Protection
The Issue
TO:
The Prime Minister of India,
Prime Minister’s Office (PMO),
South Block, New Delhi - 110011.
SUBJECT:
Mass Petition Seeking Urgent PMO Intervention, Fast-Track Trial for the Brutal Murder of Toddler Arshid (Nedumangad Case), and Nationwide Reform of Institutional Child Protection Protocols.
RESPECTED PRIME MINISTER,
We, the undersigned citizens of India, write to you with a sense of profound shock and deep collective anguish regarding the horrific torture and murder of 1.5-year-old toddler Arshid in Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
The forensic and post-mortem examinations have revealed that this helpless infant endured relentless, sadistic cruelty under the custody of his mother, Akhila, and her live-in partner, Ashkar. Medical experts documented 91 distinct wounds across the child's body, which include severe external injuries alongside critical internal organ trauma spread across 40 different areas, old and new bone fractures, genital violence, and deep lighter or cigarette burn marks. Prior to his tragic death from internal bleeding caused by a fatal blow to the head, the child was featured on social media with both arms in plaster casts—grossly misreported by the perpetrators as a "bicycle fall" to conceal the systemic, ongoing violence.
This tragedy represents a catastrophic failure of the local administrative and law enforcement safety net. It has emerged that the child’s maternal grandparents had actively approached local authorities seeking intervention due to visible signs of physical abuse. Furthermore, despite early warning signs and attempts to involve protection agencies, institutional roadblocks and a lack of immediate rescue mandates left the child in a highly abusive environment.
Because the grassroots child-welfare mechanisms failed to rescue this child despite explicit danger indicators, we respectfully demand your direct intervention to institute the following measures:
1. Fast-Track Trial and Capital Punishment: Issue directives to ensure the Thiruvananthapuram Rural Police and judicial prosecutors build an airtight case, leading to a fast-track special court trial so that the perpetrators receive the harshest possible punishment under the law without judicial delays.
2. Accountability and Probe into Official Negligence: Order an independent federal or high-level inquiry into the actions of the local police station and child welfare representatives who failed to act decisively on the early warning complaints and custody appeals filed by the family.
3. Mandatory National Child Abuse Rescue Protocol: Formulate a mandatory nationwide legal framework that binds local police, community hospitals, and Child Welfare Committees (CWCs) to immediately remove a child from a household the moment unexplainable severe trauma (such as multiple bone fractures or burn marks) is medically or socially reported.
The tragic death of baby Arshid has shaken the conscience of the nation. We look forward to your strong leadership to deliver swift justice and reform India's child protection systems so that no other infant is left unprotected in an environment of hidden torture.
Yours faithfully,
Justice for arshid kerala group
