The Issue

A few of us wanted to come onto this platform to spread awareness to an injustice happening in our community.

Austin James Harczynski is from our hometown of Louisa, Kentucky. He is the only boy of 5 siblings, and has been raised by his hard working single mother Teresa. Austin is the first in his family to attend college, enrolled into Morehead State University. Anyone who knows him can attest that he is one of the sweetest and most selfless individuals out there.

Austin works at the Morehead Walmart. On March 8th, he was arrested for an accusation from a 40 year old woman claiming that he “groped her rear end”. This woman has decided to press charges, specifically “Sexual Abuse 3rd Degree” over Austin brushing past her in an isle at his workplace. His bond was set at 5,000 dollars over a misdemeanor.

Because of the efforts of family and friends, Austin was able to be bailed out after 2 days spent at the Rowan County Detention Center. Soon after , he was kicked off campus as these charges are still open until trial. He then proceeded to stay at a hotel for two days provided by us so he could stay in Morehead until spring break.

On Friday, March 14th Austin went up to the local dollar general for a snack and the bathroom key. A worker there is accusing him of “masturbating in the beauty isle” after he adjusted his pants, immediately sexualizing him. The police came and notified him that they knew of his other charge and “recommended he gets some help and to get out of Morehead”. They eventually let him go that day and we decide to head to our vacation early.

On Thursday, March 20th Austin received a call 5 minutes after we arrived back into Kentucky state lines from an officer claiming Austin needed to come in and sign some papers. Austin agrees, and even gets a text message from the same officer where he confirms he should be in Morehead within a few hours. When Austin arrives, he does NOT sign any paperwork that they “needed”, but is instead arrested for “Indecent Exposure 2nd Degree”. Because of this, they decided to revoke his bond and he has been stuck in the Rowan County Detention Center since, and will be spending his 20th birthday in a jail cell.

Ever since this has happened, we have every right to assume that at least some of this is racially motivated. Austin has had a clear record up until this point, and everything was going in the right direction for him to have a bright future.

We have also heard wind of some people claiming heinous and downright false accusations on Austin in Louisa since this has all started, threatening him with even worse charges.

Austin has been assumed guilty before innocent for all of these accusations, which goes against what our country has been founded on. Please, please use your voices to spread awareness for Austin so he gets the justice he deserves.
