Justice for Audrey: Reform Domestic Violence Laws in NSW to Protect Women
This is personal.
Audrey was my friend. And her life was taken by a man who should have never been free. I’ve stood beside women I love as they’ve tried to escape abuse, begging for help from a system that’s slow, broken, and sometimes doesn’t care until it’s too late. I am tired of lighting candles at vigils. I am tired of saying, “This shouldn’t have happened.” I’m asking you to stand with me, to speak for Audrey and for every woman still fighting to survive.
Audrey was kind. Strong. Full of life. She should still be here.
On March 23, 2025, Audrey’s body was found in a shallow creek. She had been murdered. On April 21, police charged a 53-year-old man with her murder, a man with 11 domestic violence charges.
Eleven opportunities to intervene. And yet, he was still free. Still walking the streets. Still able to take a life.
This was not just a tragedy, it was a failure of the system. And it’s a failure we are seeing over and over again across NSW.
• In 2024, nearly half (45.9%) of all murders in NSW were related to domestic and family violence, including a rise in child victims. (Source: NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics & The Guardian, 2025)
• More than 2,500 domestic violence incidents are reported to NSW Police every month, and yet experts estimate this reflects only 40% of the real number, as many victims are too afraid or unsupported to come forward.(Source: Domestic Violence NSW)
• The court system is overwhelmed. In 2023, over a quarter of all cases in NSW local courts were domestic violence-related—but increasing delays mean more cases are being withdrawn and victims are left without protection. (Source: NSW Local Court Data, The Guardian, 2024)
And despite all of this, known repeat offenders, like the man who murdered Audrey, are often still granted bail or allowed to remain in the community.
This has to change.
This petition is a call for urgent domestic violence law reform in NSW, in Audrey’s name, and in the names of all women whose stories haven’t been heard.
We are calling on the NSW Government, the Attorney General, and the Minister for Women to:
1. Deny bail to repeat domestic violence offenders.
No one with multiple charges or a clear pattern of harm should be free to reoffend.
2. Establish a public Domestic Violence Offender Registry.
Victims, police, and communities should be empowered with knowledge about repeat abusers.
3. Implement mandatory risk assessments after the first DV report.
Early intervention saves lives. If signs of escalation are present, there must be immediate protective action.
4. Increase funding and resources for DV support services and court systems.
Victims need safe housing, legal support, and access to justice without delay.
Audrey deserved better. Every woman does. We will not stay silent. We will not wait for another life to be lost.
Please sign and share this petition. Demand justice. Demand change. Because enough is enough.
