The Issue
On October 8, 2024, in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, an act of injustice shook the African and international community, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and reform. Alexandra Martine Diengo Lumbayi, a 21-year-old Congolese student at the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières, was reported missing on the afternoon of October 2. Her body was found on Tuesday, October 8, on Saint-Quentin Island.
This tragic event has deeply affected the African community as well as students, revealing an urgent need for enhanced security and resources for international students.
However, the outrage grew when the coroner’s findings were released to the media before the family had even been informed adding to their pain and raising questions about the respect for proper procedures and the dignity of the bereaved.
In his conclusion, the coroner ruled out the possibility of a criminal act and suggested drowning as the cause of death—without providing any conclusive evidence!”
In light of the coroner’s findings, we call for continued mobilization to:
Provide the parents with the full coroner’s report and its appendices, in accordance with Articles 90.1 and 101 of the Coroners Act, with a view to public inquiries.
Also, Ensure complete transparency of all investigative elements to prevent any concealment of the facts.
We call on Canadian authorities to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances of her disappearance and death. We also demand an independent re-examination to ensure transparency and impartiality in the findings. Justice must be served.
According to investigations, similar situations occur every year and most victims do not receive the justice they deserve. This petition calls for concrete action to ensure justice is served and to prevent future injustices.

We stand united to demand justice for Alexandra Martine Diengo Lumbayi.
