Justice for Abdifatah Ahmed — Stop Police Violence Against People in Crisis

Justice for Abdifatah Ahmed — Stop Police Violence Against People in Crisis
The issue
On Thursday, April 17, 2025, in Melbourne, Victoria, Abdifatah Ahmed—a 35-year-old man in the midst of a mental health crisis—was shot and killed by two police officers.
He needed help. He needed compassion.
Instead, he was met with deadly force.
Abdifatah was not a threat. He was a son, a brother, a friend—a human being struggling, who deserved support, not violence.
His death is not just a tragedy. It’s a failure of a system that continues to treat mental illness with punishment instead of care.
We cannot stay silent. We must demand justice and real change.
We call for:
- A full, transparent, and independent investigation into Abdifatah Ahmed’s death, including the immediate release of all body cam footage and related evidence.
The creation and expansion of non-police mental health crisis response teams across Victoria—staffed by trained professionals who respond with understanding, not weapons.
Mandatory, trauma-informed de-escalation and mental health training for all police officers.
Greater investment in accessible, culturally safe, community-led mental health services—especially for marginalised communities.
Real accountability for officers involved in the killing of individuals during mental health crises.
Abdifatah’s life mattered. His story is not isolated. Across Australia—and around the world—too many lives have been lost at the intersection of mental health and state violence.
Mental illness is not a crime.
Being in crisis should never be a death sentence.
Sign this petition to stand with Abdifatah family. Sign to demand justice. Sign because this cannot keep happening.
Let his name be the last.
Let his death be the wake-up call.
Add your voice. Speak out. Share widely. Help make change happen—before another family is shattered.
