Justice for Aarti against plagiarism

Justice for Aarti against plagiarism

The Issue

Ms. Aarti Gupta Bhadauria is an sculptor from Bangalore India who works in terracotta medium. At a young age she has established her own unique style and received numerous accolades at International level. She is known for her distinctive sculptures in terracotta medium. Sometimes artists of other countries compare her work with well known sculptors like "Henry Moore" and "Barbara Hepworth".

A very senior artist Mr. Neeraj Gupta who is also president of Delhi Art Society copied her sculpture to make a big sculpture and installed it at the campus of IIT Jammu India. Mr. Neeraj and Ms. Aarti are friends on Facebook.

Mr. Neeraj Gupta shared the pictures of his sculpture on Facebook on 14.Oct.2022, when Aarti found the similarity with her work, she indicated it to Mr. Neeraj on Facebook via comments and her post. But Mr. Neeraj completely ignored her and removed some pictures that were similar to Ms. Aarti's sculpture.

Due to this ignorance, Ms. Aarti posted on her Facebook the details about similarities on 15.Oct.2022 and asked for explanation from Mr. Neeraj. Mr. Neeraj did not respond to her. But after looking at her post, her friends from other countries started criticizing Mr.Neeraj for his act of plagiarism. Mr. Neeraj then posted on Facebook a sketch of his sculpture with title "Evolution" to show that the sculpture is his own creativity.

Surprisingly, the sketch of Mr. Neeraj is the exact copy of the other angle of Ms. Aarti's sculpture. Aarti had shared the pictures and video of her sculpture on Facebook among her friends and some international groups in the month of Feb and March 2022 which is much before Mr. Neeraj's post on Facebook. As Mr. Neeraj is among Aarti's friends he is able to access all the pictures and 360 video. Aarti and her friends responded to Neeraj and showed him the proofs and asked him to accept his act of plagiarism. But Mr. Neeraj did not respond and his friends started questioning Aarti's dignity and insulted her. Mr. Neeraj also messaged to Aarti in private and said that he likes her forms and there is always unconscious inspiration among fellow artists, to which Aarti asked him to accept it in public and mention her name but Mr. Neeraj did not reply. Neeraj's other artist friends who know Aarti, misbehaved with her on phone calls and tried to suppress her, asked her for apologies as she is a woman.

On 17.Oct.2022, Mr. Neeraj posted a distorted video on Facebook comparing his and Arti's sculpture, asked her for apologies and threatened her for legal actions. Aarti quickly responded to Mr. Neeraj via her Facebook post by declaring comparison with pictures of her and his sculpture and sketch indicating exact match of both sides, but Mr. Neeraj still did not agree of his fault and offered to pay for her sculpture to close the matter.

On the same day of 17.Oct.2022, Mr. Neeraj posted a picture of a sculpture of New Zealand's highly reputed artist Ms. Ruth Killoren, declared that his sketch was inspired by it and conceptualized in 2019. Aarti's friends responded to Mr. Neeraj and showed him that there is no match between his sketch and Ruth's sculpture though his sketch is exactly matching with Aarti's sculpture. Mr. Neeraj is telling lies again and again to hide his act of plagiarism and denying all the evidence.

He is not ready to accept his faults and apologies but is trying to suppress the voice of a young woman artist by misusing his position and power. By doing this he is not only disrespecting himself but disrespecting women, disrespecting the global art community and above all disrespecting multiple countries, and tarnishing the image of India at international level.
