Justice for 29 Dogs Killed in Plastic Bags in Lee County, Alabama

The Issue

In Lee County, Alabama, deputies discovered a horrifying scene: 29 dead dogs, including puppies, were found piled in plastic bags in a backyard.

Inside the home, 24 more dogs were found alive but severely emaciated—starving and suffering. This wasn’t neglect. This was deliberate, prolonged cruelty.

Three people—Curtis Dewayne Haralson, Patricia Ann Sims, and Tiffany Ann Sims—have been arrested and are expected to face felony animal cruelty charges. But arrests are just the beginning. We are demanding full justice for every single animal that suffered or died in that home.

These dogs had no voice. They depended on humans for care and compassion—and were instead met with starvation, suffering, and death. What happened to them must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. And it must lead to long-term changes in how animal cruelty is investigated and punished in Alabama.

We are calling on Lee County District Attorney Jessica Ventiere to:

  • Vigorously pursue felony charges in this case, with maximum sentencing;
  • Publicly commit to ensuring none of the accused are allowed to own animals again;
  • Support the surviving dogs with medical care, rehabilitation, and eventual adoption.

We also call on the Alabama Legislature to:

  • Strengthen state laws to impose harsher penalties for large-scale animal abuse;
  • Provide more funding for animal control and cruelty investigations.
  • Animal cruelty on this scale is not just a tragedy—it’s a warning sign.

Studies show that unchecked abuse often escalates and is linked to other forms of violence. Holding the abusers fully accountable protects not just animals, but entire communities.

Sign this petition to demand justice for the 29 innocent lives lost—and protection for the 24 dogs who survived. They deserve a second chance. They deserve justice.
