On Monday, July 19th, 2021, I was again on a sit-in demonstration on the Pavement at the doorsteps of the UNHCR office in Athens, Greece and was requesting to see a representative from the Organization concerning my repeated appeals addressed to them for my accommodation, for my survival and also for my Resettlement in another country.
I arrived there at 13:00 O’clock and have informed the reception of my requests for speaking with a representative from the organization. Apparently, the receptionist conveyed my message to UNHCR and got back to me shortly after and, from the door while I was sitting beside my Banner, he shouts and says “They do not want to speak to you, send them an email they said.”
As the guard had informed me of UNHCR’s response, I began drafting a very depressing text for my post on Facebook and right about when I finished doing that, suddenly I become aware of two employees of the organization standing right in front of me and calling up my name.
Too busy with writing, I only noticed them when they called my name twice. Having set my phone’s camera on recording mode and looking up at them, the first thing I wanted to know was to confirm whether OR not they were really from UNHCR. They confirmed verbally, but didn’t show IDs.
Weren’t happy about being captured on the camera and avoiding the camera perspective, they said they were out in order to propose a meeting with me which they said would probably take place within the next two days. To which I agreed.
However, since I wasn’t familiar with their faces, it was critical for me to know they will in fact see and read my email(s), at least the latest one, thoroughly, before attending the proposed meeting and save me all the troubles of repeating myself to them all over again.
They said they haven’t read my email(s) and that the timing of the meeting hasn’t been finalized yet, and whoever attends on behalf of the UNHCR would read the email(s) prior to the meeting.
I asked whether the new High Commissioner’s representative, Mireille Girard has seen OR read my email(s). They didn’t answer the question straight forward, instead one of them said we are aware of your case while just moments before the other one had admitted that he wasn’t.
Before they go back into their offices, I requested multiple times to be provided with the contact details of the both employees, but neither of them agreed, even on giving their full names, let alone their formal email addresses OR their contact numbers.
At this point I don’t really know what are the intentions of proposing this meeting. Whether the Organization wants to continue pushing for my further imprisonment in Greece OR whether they have finally come to their senses and are ready to refer my case for Resettlement in another country; it all remains to be seen.
They asked me to confirm my phone number for them on a piece of sticky note in order to notify me of the timing and the location of the said meeting.
In addition to writing my Phone number, I also referred them to my latest email which was addressed to UNHCR’s high-level officials, both in Geneva and in Athens on Monday, July 12th, 2021, and handed the sticky note back to them.
I am now waiting to see what awaits me on the pending meeting, whether I would finally be rescued from this country OR be damned and eventually die of starvation here.
After the brief discussion with the two employees of UNHCR, I still continued my sit-in protest in front of their office till 19:00 O'clock, by then I had to leave in order to get back to the National Library of Greece on time so I would have enough time left in order to charge my electronics and edit and publish the videos.
Back again at the National Library of Greece, because my Phone’s internet was over in the evening, I therefore couldn’t finish publishing the videos of the day and for the same very reason I also couldn’t go anywhere which by that, I mean, an Embassy OR an Organization, on Tuesday, July 20th, 2021, as I had to go to the downtown and look for new SIM Card with Unlimited Date Package that seems to be more economic than topping up an already in-service number.
Nothing like this should happen to anyone, anywhere and no one should be put through a situation like this.
This is a dire emergency. Please do not be indifferent and ignorant to what is happening here and take action now.
