Justice 4 Childhood SA Survivors: Bring SB 257 to the floor 4 a VOTE!
The Issue
Every community in Michigan deserves safe institutions, transparent systems, and fair access to justice. SB 257, part of the Justice for Survivors package, strengthens protections for children and adults by ensuring that childhood predators and the institutions that enable them cannot evade accountability for sexual abuse and that survivors—whether they live in rural, suburban, or urban areas—have a fair chance to be heard. SB 257 passed the Michigan Senate in May 2025 with bipartisan support. It remains in the House Government Operations Committee, where it has not yet been given a chance to debate or for a vote. This is especially retraumatizing to survivors when the committee perpetually prioritizes more trivial issues (e.g., raw milk without safeguards). The lifelong impact to the wellbeing of survivors of sexual violence against children should not be up for corporate dollar debate. Survivors have a higher risk of developing depression, anxiety, substance abuse, sexually transmitted infections, and even asthma, all costly to individuals and society. As residents of Michigan, we believe this bill deserves open discussion, public testimony, and consideration by our elected representatives. Protecting children from predators, holding institutions accountable, and ensuring fairness for survivors are values shared across our state. The pursuit of justice for survivors of childhood sexual abuse has never been more relevant amidst an active federal Epstein Files cover-up. We respectfully call on the House Government Operations Committee and House leadership to schedule SB 257 for a public hearing and allow it to move forward for a vote.
