JUST BE COOL: A Safer Transit Option for Women & Kids on TTC

JUST BE COOL: A Safer Transit Option for Women & Kids on TTC
The Issue
Everyone deserves to feel safe on public transit. But for many women and children in Toronto, that isn’t the reality. Harassment, unwanted attention, and threatening behaviour happen far too often. This isn’t about blaming the TTC — it’s about recognizing that our safety options haven’t kept up with the lived experiences of riders today.
THE CURRENT REALITY
Reported violent and harassing incidents on the TTC have risen in recent years. The TTC has acknowledged that this partly reflects better reporting, but we also know many incidents go unreported — especially when riders can’t access Wi-Fi underground. Women, girls, and boys under 12 face some of the highest risks during peak congestion and later hours.
These aren’t rare stories. Nearly every woman who relies on the TTC has either witnessed or experienced something unsafe at some point.
A SIMPLE, REASONABLE SOLUTION
We’re asking the TTC to introduce a pilot on Line 2 (Bloor–Danforth):
Designate the first and last subway cars as optional Women & Children Safer Space Cars during specific higher-risk hours.
This pilot is:
- voluntary
- low-cost
- practical
- based on successful international models
- easy to implement without affecting anyone else's commute
WHY THIS HELPS
This pilot doesn’t change how anyone else travels — it simply adds one more option for riders who experience higher risks. It’s a small, practical step that gives women and children a clearer, safer choice during certain hours while keeping the rest of the system exactly the same. Cities around the world already use similar measures with strong public support, and Toronto can benefit from the same approach.
A PERSONAL NOTE
As a long-time TTC rider, I know the difference between feeling unsafe and being unsafe. I’ve experienced incidents first-hand, stepped in for other people, and had people step in for me. Many riders share similar stories. This pilot is a simple, modern way to reflect the reality of Toronto today.
CALL TO ACTION
A safer TTC benefits everyone.
This pilot is a small, reasonable step worth taking.
