Bring awareness of the conditions of Carolyn Richardson in the Federal Bureaus of Prison.

The Issue

On August 10, 2020, the U.S. signed off on a settlement of $2 million, including up to 25% in attorney fees, in a lawsuit brought by a federal prisoner Carolyn Richardson, 46, who was denied necessary emergency eye surgery for closed-angle glaucoma for months. By the time she received the surgery, she was legally blind. While receiving medical care she was sexually assaulted by a former correctional officer Colin Akparanta. He allegedly pretended to be a “reverend” offering her spiritual guidance while “abusing and assaulting her with increasing roughness” between February and November 2018. Carolyn Richardson was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for operating a sophisticated scheme to fraudulently obtain and distribute thousands of Schedule II controlled substances, particularly opioids such as oxycodone, without a medical license. Richardson had previously pled guilty to conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute oxycodone, which is her first offense. She feels she has suffered dearly for her crime by being blind and sexually assaulted. Richardson is looking for support from her community.
