Hello, I am Lexi Johnson! I am a Sophomore from Red Oak, Iowa and I am doing a change project for my Language class. The topic I chose is about puppy mills and the issues within the facility. According to humane society.org puppy Mills originated in the mid 1960's, there are about 10,000 over the United states, about 2 million puppies bred each year, and 1.2 million dogs euthanized each year. Many of the common causes of animal deaths are from untreated sicknesses.

According to Paws.org 90% of puppies nationwide in pet stores come from puppy mills. This means puppies all over the nation are affected by the health conditions which could even lead to death. In order for puppy mills to sell to pet stores they must be licensed by the United States department of Agriculture. Some of these cases they are not licensed but are still selling to pet stores. According to ASPCA, 80% of adults would not buy a puppy if they knew it came from a puppy mill because of the problems that would come with the dog.

Many dogs are dying each year of health conditions within the facilities that can be easily changed. Puppies suffer from problems from being separated from their mom too early or die from the conditions like not enough nutrition or diseases from which they are living in. Dogs do not deserve to live their life this way. Puppy mills are legal in most states as long as they get food water and shelter, but sometimes they go up to 12 hours without food or water. I hope this petition can encourage stricter laws within puppy mills and stop the unsanitary conditions that are killing millions of dogs each year.
