The Issue

We strongly urge Hilliard City Schools (Hilliard, Ohio) to join the Vouchers Hurt Ohio lawsuit. As one of the 10th largest school districts in the state, Hilliard must take a lead to oppose the erosion of public education for the sake of our students, our community, and future generations.

Ohio's EdChoice voucher program began as a pilot to help students in underfunded districts due to Ohio's flawed school funding model. But the program has turned into a rebate system benefiting families already choosing private, often religious, schools. The Court ruled in June 2025 that the Expanded EdChoice Voucher program was unconstitutional. The Ohio Attorney General vowed that Ohio will appeal the decision, and the ruling was stayed pending appeal. The lawsuit is bound to make its way to the Ohio Supreme Court.

In the meaning, EdChoice Expansion vouchers are diverting significant resources from public schools, with costs rising from $42 million in 2008 to over $350 million in 2024.

16% of the taxpayer education funding was going to pay for private school vouchers in the 23-24 school year. Yet these vouchers are unaccountable to the taxpayers.

6% of the students living Hilliard School District area receive these unaccountable private school vouchers.

These vouchers accounted for 16% of the total tax-payer education funding for students living in the Hilliard School District.

Students receiving private school vouchers get almost three times as much funding as public school students.

Ohio must fulfill its constitutional obligation to fund public schools fairly and adequately. Legal action through the courts is one of the few remaining options for Ohioans, as gerrymandering over decades has weakened our electoral power. Please add your name to this petition (district residents only) to encourage Hilliard City Schools to join the hundreds of other Ohio districts, including comparable districts like Upper Arlington and Worthington, in opposing this harmful and unconstitutional program.

This petition will be presented to the school board at the January meeting.*

*Updated from November meeting.
