The Issue

For the American Coalition of Ukrainian Organizations and countless others from the Ukrainian-American community, the performance of the 1812 Overture at the Hollywood Bowl hits too close to home. This piece, composed by Tchaikovsky, celebrates Russian military victories - a stark reminder of Russia's long history of disregard for international law and its oppressive governance.

In this current climate, where Ukraine continually suffers under brutal russian aggression, the performance of this piece is painfully insensitive. It adds insult to injury by indirectly endorsing the actions of Russia, which intensifies our suffering and undermines our resistance. As we stand in solidarity with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, we feel the sharp sting of each note that glorifies Russia's military might.

Moreover, such performances contradict US bipartisan efforts to halt Russia's recklessness. According to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, there is a real push from the US to combat efforts by russia to evade international law. Music may seem harmless, but every performance of the 1812 Overture stands as a symbol of tacit support.

On behalf of the Ukrainian-American community, all supporters, and everyone who stands for peace and justice, we respectfully request the Hollywood Bowl to cancel the performance of the 1812 Overture in August. We plead with you to take a stand against the celebration of military oppression and to support us in our quest to raise awareness about the struggle of the Ukrainian people in these challenging times.

Show your commitment in the fight against military aggression. Please, sign this petition and urge the Hollywood Bowl to cancel the performance of the 1812 Overture.
