Organic Peas in a Home Garden

EVERYONE IS EFFECTED.  YOU MAY NOT EVEN REALIZE IT.

  • Have you ever walked through a parking lot and wondered why the trees and shrubs chosen for decoration do not also produce food to eat?
  • Have you ever wanted to try consuming raw, whole milk from a sustainable farmer – only to find out that you are not allowed to do this – despite being allowed to drive a car, drink alcohol, or do any number of other activities proven to have orders of magnitude higher risk to life, wellness, or property?
  • Have you ever yearned to grow your own basil to use for cooking – only to be told you cannot by your landlord?
  • Have you ever wondered why good, fresh produce was not available near your home or is ONLY sold in chain grocery stores?

We at the 50-by-50 Initiative believe that these examples and many more are just the tip of the iceberg of human rights restrictions that separate YOU from YOUR ancestral past – that separate you from YOUR CORE HUMANITY!!!

IT WAS NOT ALWAYS THIS WAY, AND AMERICANS DO NOT HAVE TO STAY SEPERATED FROM THEIR FOOD.

  • American suburbs and cities were not always so hostile to farming; it was something that everyone did.  As told in Raising Pastured Rabbits for Meat, Nichki Carangelo did not “grow up on a farm,” but she grew up with an appreciation for her food and from where it comes because she “had grandparents with virtual oases for backyards. … Grapevines, rows of peach and pear trees, and tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers [were] stuffed into every break in the asphalt" [1].  Like in Nichki's story, by the turn of the 21st Century, farming no matter where you lived was something mostly relegated to recent immigrant communities.  But, such activity is what America was like nearly EVERYWHERE pre-World War II, and you can help bring this back.  You can help bring back the true spirit of America – one that is in tune with our ancestral roots, both indigenous and immigrant alike.
  • You do not need large amounts of land to make a difference.  Food can and should be grown everywhere.  In 1930, 0.7 percent of all farms reported on the U.S. Agricultural Census were under 3 acres in size, and the average farm size was just over 150 acres.  Also, there were nearly a million farms with less than 20 acres [2].
  • Small farms can pack a mighty punch.  In Texas, The Cool Down (TCD) reports that a local farmer, known as "the salad guy" is taking on big grocery chains with his half-acre garden [3]
  • Find a way or make one!  You can farm anywhere.  For example,  Novella Carpenter turned a vacant lot in downtown Oakland into a thriving farm [4].

Greens and Turnips

You can do it!  You do not need "perfect" farming conditions to take back your rights.  Anywhere you find a lawn seeded with non-native grasses and mowed like it is a golf course you have found an opportunity!  Together, we MUST take back these wasted spaces and return to usefulness through growth of complex ecosystems or farming.  Examples of great candidate locations include:

  • A rooftop deck,
  • A window sill,
  • Your yard,
  • Your workplace,
  • An abandoned plot in your community, or
  • Land at your local church or school.

We at the 50-by-50 Initiative believe that to create (specifically to grow and to harvest) and to use the product of that creation (specifically to eat what you choose to eat) is a basic ancestral human right.  All to often, corporate interests promote restrictions on YOUR ability to choose - in the name of consumer safety – which creates a world where No Food is Local and No Food is Safe!

THE CURRENT STATE OF ANTI-AGRICULTURE JEOPARDIZES HUMAN SAFETY AND WELLBEING.

  • For example, in November 2023, “at least 52 toddlers from 25 states across the nation … suffered adverse effects linked to recalled cinnamon apple puree and applesauce contaminated with lead" [5].
  • Anti-human policies and culturicide promotes the creation of food deserts.  Food deserts, in turn, cause premature death, birth defects, cardiovascular disease, nutritional deficiencies, and more [6]
  • In the past quarter of a century, farming in the United States has seen a dramatic increase in the use of patented genetic products for farming.  These seed products contaminate the genetic material of nearby farming operations, and because of this contamination saving seeds from your own planted crops with your own non-patented seeds can end up being illegal according to established case law [7].  The biggest offender in this category of food insecurity was Monsanto - whose intellectual property is currently owned and sold by Bayer.
  • Short mowed lawns are harmful to humans and the environment, and they encourage the overuse of fertilizers.  They also contribute to urban heating and can exacerbate the negative effects of climate change [8]

THERE ARE MANY SOLUTIONS.  THE 50-BY-50 INITIATIVE IS BUT ONE.  JOIN US AND DO YOUR PART.

  • The 50-by-50 Initiative is a goal that stems from a dream of a sustainable future where people are invested in their food sources.
  • The 50-by-50 Initiative seeks to help local Governments and communities roll back anti-agricultural statutes that separate people from their food [9].
  • The 50-by-50 Initiative eschews the anti-competitive regulations and globalist agendas that decrease the food security of cultures.
  • The 50-by-50 Initiative is a nationwide partnership of likeminded agriculturists, farming enthusiasts, and community advocates that want to push back on the monopoly of corporate control of the food cycle and put control of food back into the hands of the people.

The 50-by-50 Initiative strives to help 50% of Americans consume 50% of their food from sources that are grown and produced less than 50 kilometers away by the year 2050.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE TODAY.  EVERY SIGNATURE HELPS.  EVERY COMMITMENT MADE IS ONE STEP CLOSER TO A BETTER TOMORROW.

When you sign, you commit to help enact, enforce, and preserve the 50-by-50 principles through community outreach, local political action, lobbying, letter writing, personal practice, and more.  You decide what you can do to support this initiative.  Most importantly, you are joining a community of like-minded heroes with a desire to return power over their personal food consumption choices to themselves – where it rightfully belongs.

Principle 1:  The more locally your food is grown, the more control you have over it, the more secure your food source will be, and the lower the carbon footprint can be for the same food items.

Principle 2:  Food should be grown EVERYWHERE, in urban centers, in suburban areas, and in rural communities.  The growth of food and the movement of food to the market is among the oldest of human traditions, and when communities legislate away the ability to grow food in their own communities, they invariably legislate away their own humanity, their own creative industry, and their own health.

Principle 3: No one should possess a patent, intellectual property, or a controlling interest that restricts people’s access to food, the growth of food, and the saving of seeds for a future crop.  Any restrictions on the basic human ability and right to grow, produce, harvest, and save to grow again is a restriction on humanity itself.

Principle 4: To ensure food security, the perpetuation of human involvement in agriculture, and the growth of food as a necessary element to food preparation, eating, and human sustenance; the majority of all human food must be grown, harvested, prepared, and consumed within a small regional area.  Ideally, at least 50% of the overall human diet should be consumed within 50 kilometers of where it is grown or harvested (roughly the furthest distance that a human can reliably move goods without mechanical assistance over a day).

Principle 5: Animal husbandry, traditional hunting, gardening, farming, and wild plant foraging are all forms of harvesting – plant or animal harvesting – whereby traditional human cultures access and prepare their food in a way that honors the sacrifice made by all lifeforms that sustain us, whether they be plant, fungus, animal, or other.  Governmental, religious, community, and cultural regulatory bodies of all forms MUST reverse the damage done to basic human rights caused by the incessant tide of prohibitions on the basic human right to grow, to harvest, and to eat!

Principle 6:  Removal of human culture from food production WILL cause the loss of understanding within a culture of what it means to be human.  Separation of humans from the cycle of sustaining life WILL inevitably lead to a loss in human value or worth.

Principle 7: Humans have the right to purchase and consume the food of their choice from the source of their choice as long as that choice does not harm other humans.  This principle is only valid if the provider of the food is honest in labeling and in communication of the history of that food and how it was prepared for human use.  No government or regulatory body has the right to separate a human from their ability to choose the food that they wish to eat, to harvest, or to thank for its sacrifice to enable their life as long as the consumption desired does not cause harm to other humans.  Restrictions on the human right to choose the food they wish to eat from the source they wish to use are affronts to the basic human right to agency of purpose and being.

By signing this petition, you are affirming your agreement with the seven principles of the 50-by-50 initiative.  You are also committing to take action to do your part to help make the 50-by-50 dream a reality.

Together, we can help create a future where by the year 2050, the majority of Americans consume 50% of their food from sources that are grown and produced less than 50 kilometers away from where they live.
