Protect Pets/Livestock/Humans from Stray Bullets
I have pet Kunekune pigs, they are a small docile grazing pig. They do not root and are extremely intelligent and loving. Yesterday, a neighbor who was shooting guns on his property of around 2 acres shot a killed one of these pet pigs right in our backyard. He says it was a stray bullet. It shattered her leg and she fell where she got hit. She suffered alone till we found her. Then passed away having seizures and in pain. It was a traumatic thing to witness and our young kids are the ones who found her.
The Sheriff department told us just last week in Johnson County another neighbor shot and killed a neighbor on accident. There is not even a news article for this! The poor man lost his life and there is nothing that can be done.
Two years ago in a small subdivision a neighbor shot and killed two of my piglets that got out and into his front yard. He shot in the direction of his neighbors house that was less than 100 feet away. They saw it happen from the front window. What would have happened if a stray bullet had hit the neighbor?
It is up to the County to decide if the Sheriff's office can enforce laws. In Johnson County Texas, they have decided to not let the Sheriff's uphold the law that prevents people from discharging firearms on land that is less than 10 acres and not allow neighbors to have projectiles cross property lines. We need our county commissions to vote to allow the Sheriff's department to enforce the law that already exists in the State of Texas. This is for all of our safety here in Johnson county, not just for animals but also for your children and family.
Ask the Johnson County Commissioners office to vote to enforce the following law today:
Sec. 229.002. REGULATION OF DISCHARGE OF WEAPON. A municipality may not apply a regulation relating to the discharge of firearms or other weapons in the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the municipality or in an area annexed by the municipality after September 1, 1981, if the firearm or other weapon is:
(1) a shotgun, air rifle or pistol, BB gun, or bow and arrow discharged:
(A) on a tract of land of 10 acres or more and more than 150 feet from a residence or occupied building located on another property; and
(B) in a manner not reasonably expected to cause a projectile to cross the boundary of the tract; or
(2) a center fire or rim fire rifle or pistol of any caliber discharged:
(A) on a tract of land of 50 acres or more and more than 300 feet from a residence or occupied building located on another property; and
