Menards to pay employees hazard pay during coronavirus outbreak

Menards to pay employees hazard pay during coronavirus outbreak
The Issue
The corona virus has affected thousands throughout the world and the United States, during this time mass hysteria has caused store profits to rise due to panic shoppers. The Menards stores have particularly seen an influx of guests during store hours and the chances of being infected have also increased. Workers at Menards come into contact with several guests throughout their shift and should receive a sort of hazard pay for working in these frightening times. Part-time workers receive zero paid time off and only a couple of sick days before being terminated without proof. Full-time workers are especially at risk working shifts that are 10+ hours long. Guests have been known to show up to the receiving department early in the morning hoping to find toilet paper, tissues, and masks before the products are stocked on the shelf. According to an article written by a medical team currently experimenting with the virus said, "some coronavirus can potentially remain viable — capable of infecting a person — for up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to three days on plastic and stainless steel." Workers at Menards have to constantly come into contact with items that guests have physically touched including cash, cards, return items, holding the item a guest needs help with, etc. All of these can be materials that the COVID-19 virus can survive and infect others on. We ask John Menard and the Menards Corporate Team to please consider a sort of hazard pay or time paid off if the company were to shut down. And we ask all Menards employees to please urge their fellow co workers and family members to take a look at this petition and consider signing it to help us retail workers out at your favorite and best home improvement store in midwest. Thank you!
