Mobile companies informing new smartphone customers of apps that can prevent DUI accidents
The Issue
“Liam’s Law”
To the following individuals,
T-Mobile

John J. Legere
AT&T
Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors
Randall Stephenson
Verizon
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Lowell C. McAdam
Sprint

Marcelo Claure
On September 3, 2016, 15-month-old Liam Kowall was struck by 72 year old Marie Higgins in her car, whom was soon found to be under the influence of alcohol. He did not survive and even under the circumstances, his parents, Mishel and Marcus, are fighting for change. I propose for a change in the process of buying a smartphone. This process should include a mandatory short tutorial from employees on how to download and use apps such as Uber or Lyft. This quick introduction can help prevent predicaments such as Liam’s. Even if customers are not interested in downloading the apps, they are aware of the opportunity to call or order a car to pick them up next time they are under the influence. I am asking companies like AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon to join me in this movement. Liam was just a baby who was never able to make his own decision, but with this proposition, individuals can make better decisions to protect themselves and others. I propose this legal notice be called “Liam’s Law” after the baby who lost his life and was able to give life to others by donating his organs. The least we can do as a country is give his name an unforgettable purpose.
