BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY: Mandate a Stay in Place Order and Enforce Community Agreement!

The Issue

On February 4th, 2021, just a week into physical classes at Bucknell, a campus wide surge of 17 new positive cases prompted University President John Bravman to announce a temporary transfer to remote instruction.

On February 12th, after 60 positive cases in a week, John Bravman updated the COVID protocols. In that email, the President confirmed reports that students in close proximity with the virus are being held in their residential halls and allowed to visit public dining areas, and held this as new policy to *prevent* the virus. This is absurd, and other policies including keeping the KLARC open while imposing an already non-enforced limit on group-gathering will not halt the spread of the virus.

There are currently, as of February 12th, 2021, 88 active cases on the campus and upwards of 208 students in isolation. No new restrictions on the campus' gym facilities or athletics have been placed. There is no publicly known enforcement of University safety guidelines regarding masking, social distancing, and large gatherings, which is putting large amounts of the campus and broader Lewisburg community at risk.

This petition is demanding that University President John Bravman and the Emergency Response Team managing this crisis immediately mandate a stay-in-place order for the duration of this major outbreak on campus as well as lay out stricter guidelines for enforcement of the COVID-19 community agreement that all students signed upon arriving onto campus.

Further, campus athletics and use of shared gym facilities should be temporarily suspended to protect the health and wellbeing of the students involved, keeping in mind that as of now, most of the basketball team is already isolated from proximity to positive cases.
