Living in Sterling Ranch, Colorado, we feel compelled to share our deep concerns about the current plan of John Adams Academy (JAA) to use Snake River Street as a primary access point to their school, starting in the Fall of 2026. Many in our community are genuinely fearful that the use of Snake River Street will lead to increased traffic congestion and, more worryingly, a possible uptick in accidents – due to its design that involves an unprotected left-hand turn, across Waterton Road to Snake River St.
These concerns are not just hypothetical; they're grounded in real risks associated with the road's current infrastructure that could jeopardize the safety of our children, parents, JAA staff, and all who traverse this route. It's crucial to recognize that the safety of our community must be a priority over mere convenience.
It is anticipated that the traffic flow will be 200+ cars taking an unprotected left hand turn from Waterton Rd to Snake River St in a 20-minute window twice a day (~7:30am and ~3:30pm). Because of this apparent safety and congestion issues, it is logical that many JAA parents will decide to avoid the JAA recommend route (Waterton Rd to Snake River St) and instead drive through the main area of Ascent Village via Eagle River to Snake River/Butte Creek St, creating safety and congestion in Ascent Village during the time people are going to and from work and school.
A more secure and efficient alternative exists: Middle Fork Road was repeatedly recommended to JAA by the Douglas County Engineering Department to be the primary entrance point to the school. By making Middle Fork Road the primary access point starting in the fall of 2026, we can significantly alleviate traffic congestion and enhance safety. Middle Fork Road is better equipped to handle the school traffic, providing a safer route without deteriorating travel times.
We urge John Adams Academy to reconsider their current plan and take the Douglas County Engineering Department recommendations and choose the long-term safety and well-being of our community. Please join us in signing this petition to persuade the John Adams Academy to switch their proposed primary access route to Middle Fork Road starting in the Fall of 2026. Your support is vital in creating a safe environment for everyone in Sterling Ranch. Together, we can make a change for the better.
