Hello to everyone who signed for the removal of the McKinley statue and the plaque on the Arcata Plaza.  Here is an update and a call for help.

SUCCESS! The plaque that referred to the genocide of Indigenous Peoples as “Indian Troubles.” was removed in March 2018.  See attached photo.

As you recall, on February 21st, 2018 the Arcata City Council voted unanimously to remove the plaque.  They also voted 4-1 to remove the statue of William McKinley from the center of the Arcata plaza. Immediately after this vote, certain Arcata residents partnered with the sole dissenting voter, Arcata City Councilmember Michael Winkler, to gather enough signatures to force the issue to a vote by Arcata residents only.

This group wrote the ballot measure "Measure M" which if passed will overturn the councils vote to remove.

Measure M will be decided at the ballot on November 6, 2018.

Work is now being done by the No on Measure M committee to provide education and organize for action so that Arcata voters have enough information to vote NO on Measure M.
