Anchoring and Mooring in Kings Bay NEEDS TO BE CHANGED
The Issue
Per Title XXIV Chapter 327 on Vessel Safety for other areas of Florida it outlines the safety of anchoring and anchoring limitation areas. Much like the area described in this article, the area of Kings Bay is heavily populated year round and anchored vessels that are sitting in the bay are posing a hazard to swimmers, vessels underway, the Captains in our area that have to maneuver around them everyday and the environmental hazard of them towards our manatees. We are petitioning that something be done about all of the anchored vessels that are accumulating in our beautiful Kings Bay area. Just like Miami Dade, we should adopt their statutes on this issue that state: Densely Populated areas, which have narrow state waterways, residential docking facilities and significant recreational boating traffic are designated as anchoring limitation areas. The Kings Bay area should be one of those anchoring limitation areas due to our area being a highly sought out area for out of towners, tourists and our locals. Even putting a three day limitation on anchoring in Kings Bay would help to resolve this massive issue. Putting this into effect will also help to cut down on the contamination from people dumping their waste in our local waterways. Many people have tried to fight this issue in Citrus County and it is time that our officials step up and do something about this issue instead of letting it fall waist side!
