STOP DESTRUCTION AND COMMERCIALIZATION OF JEEVANJEE GARDENS IN NAIROBI KENYA.

STOP DESTRUCTION AND COMMERCIALIZATION OF JEEVANJEE GARDENS IN NAIROBI KENYA.
The Issue
We members of Bunge la mwanainchi and residents of Nairobi city county are petitioning to stop the intended Jeevanjee rehabilitation plan, that will lead to ecological destruction and commercialization of the only green park in the Nairobi CBD, by the Nairobi city county and UN HABITAT.
The plan includes,
1. Cutting down of some trees.
2. Introduction of market stalls and exhibitions
3. Introduction of food kiosks.
4. Displacement of Bunge la Mwanainchi from its current location in the park.
Jeevanjee gardens was donated to the people of Nairobi by Alibhai mulla jeevanjee not to be a market but to be a resting place, It is home to many indigenous trees and many bird species and any destruction is against article 69 and 70 of the constitution of Kenya.
Jeevanjee garden is also home to Bunge la Mwanainchi, meaning peoples parliament, a social movement that gives the common people a platform to discuss and address issues affecting their day to day lives and any interference with this platform is interfering with freedom of speech and expression, the constitution also gives room for public participation and the residents of Nairobi and the users of the park were never consulted in the intended rehabilitation plan.
Since 1991 their have been some plans to grab this park by some greedy politicians and business people because of its location in the CBD and its market value, but Bunge la mwanainchi has always stood firm to stop them and we are calling once again to the friends of environment and residents of Nairobi to sign this petition to SAVE JEEVANJEE GARDENS PARK.
