My name is JJ. In 2021, at the age of 33, I was diagnosed with “Heart Failure”. Since then, I have relentlessly followed through with all medical treatments, medications, and surgeries recommended by my Doctors. Still, I linger in a limbo of chronic illness, continuous visits to the Emergency Room, yearning for the chance to live a normal, Healthy Life. The gateway to this much-desired Life is a “Heart Transplant”, but, the current process stands as a barrier to such a Life.

To be eligible to receive a Heart Transplant, Physicians oversee an unknown selection criteria, which results in an opaque process. This may deny many the opportunity for transformational health outcomes. In the United States alone, more than 6 million adults are living with Heart Failure, with the number projected to increase by 46% by 2030. And over 600,000 Adults die each year in the United States from Cardiovascular Diseases (American Heart Association). 

The system for “Heart Transplant Recipient Selection” must be modernized, with Patient inclusivity at its Heart. We need a collaborative, transparent, and inclusive process, giving all Heart Failure Patients, like Myself, the opportunity for a Second Chance at Life.
