Insinkerator: Please Take Back Your Garbage Disposal

The Issue

When I bought my house, it came with an Insinkerator Badger 100, which worked well for about a year. Then, the motor broke. Since Insinkerator had their name all over it, I figured they wanted it back, but their customer service representative Jim told me to throw it in the garbage.

I guess this means Insinkerator’s disposals are garbage.

Garbage disposals are expensive, and I don’t think it’s fair of Insinkerator to charge people all that money for something they don’t even want themselves. So I asked Jim why Insinkerator doesn’t take back its disposals after they stop working, and he said he doesn’t know of any other manufacturer that does.

I guess that means Insinkerator isn’t any different from its competitors.

Every garbage disposal I’ve ever used has been an Insinkerator, starting with the one in my parents’ house when I was a kid. I always thought they were the industry leader, but it seems like they don’t do anything unless another company does it first.

So I asked Jim how to get Insinkerator to stand by its products and take them back to refurbish or recycle. He said that a lot of consumers would have to ask them to do it.

If you have a kitchen sink, you could be an Insinkerator customer. But why buy something that’s just going to stop working from a company that manufactures garbage? Don’t you want to buy from a responsible company that cares enough to create cradle-to-cradle products instead of stripping the planet of natural resources then piling more and more junk into landfills?

Jim said that he would have to talk to people higher up than him to make something like this happen. So I found another Jim online--Jim Wurm--who is Insinkerator’s vice president and director of marketing, strategy, business and product development. That sounds pretty high up. Jim Wurm is a “dynamic, results-driven leader” and an “expert in discovering and launching new... markets and product lines,” as well as being “a visionary leader with a history of building winning teams that deliver innovative solutions to customers.”

I want results. I want Insinkerator to discover a new market and launch a new product line. I want a visionary leader to deliver an innovative solution to us customers. If anybody can help with this, it has to be Jim Wurm!

Please ask Jim Wurm to take back Insinkerator’s garbage disposal.
