Tell Shasta High School That Racist Acts Toward Our Children Will Not Be Tolerated!

The Issue

The election of Donald Trump has been both disheartening and dangerous for our country.  In the short amount of time since he has been declared as the "leader" of our country, there has been an increased number of attacks against minorities, women, Muslims, and those in the LGBT community.  In order to ensure the safety and freedom of all Americans, we must stand-up when we see members of our community being harassed, attacked, and intimidated.  We have to show those with hate in their hearts that we will not be a country where people are scared because of the color of their skin, their sexual preferences, or their religious denomination.

On November 9th, Latino students at Shasta High School in Redding, CA received fake deportation letters from another classmate.   The student who handed out these letters posted a video on Twitter videoing his act.  In a Chicago Tribune article, the school superintendent, James Cloney, is quoted saying (regarding the offender), "obviously he thought he was being funny."  The article further states that Cloney said that no official discipline was planned for the student, though the school planned to talk to his family.

The school administration must realize that racism is never a joke.  Any act of racism on school campuses must be handled swiftly and with "official" consequences.  I am certainly aware that a consequence to this student  will not undue the hundreds of years of racism in this country, but it is will certainly communicate to students in a real way that their acts of hatred will not be tolerated no matter who is elected president! Please stand with me to ensure that our children know that we will do all that we can to protect them from the hate that is being so brazenly displayed in our country.   If you would like to reach out to the school district directly, the contact information for the superintendent, Jim Cloney is jcloney@suhsd.net.
