Petition updateJess's Rule - Improve the awareness and diagnosis of cancer in young adults.Celebrating a ‘rethink’ approach.

As I wait, with a mixture of cautious hope and some anxiety, for the decision on how Jess’s Law will be actioned, I have been reflecting on how valuable it would be to see General Practice doctors applauded for their pragmatic caution and genuine concern.

The implementation of the ‘Three Strikes and We Rethink’ initiative in primary care will inevitably lead to outcomes where patients are found not to have cancer or any life-threatening condition. And this is a good thing. It is not bad practice or a waste of NHS resources, it is sensible, prudent medicine.

The month before Jess died, just before her diagnosis, her blood tests showed reduced liver function, despite the fact that she was a previously fit and healthy 27-year-old, who neither smoked nor drank. The decision was made to wait six weeks “to see”. This result came on top of countless other red flag symptoms. The decision proved fatal.

Let’s celebrate sensible, justifiable caution, because often, thankfully, the outcome will be an all-clear. And that is worth celebrating.

In the next few weeks, we hope Jess’s Law will be actioned with a fanfare, with clear guidance and renewed hope.
