USA Ms. Heels for Wheels 2016 is denied Thanksgiving parade participation...
The Issue
Talathia McKenzie was crowned the first USA Ms. Heels for Wheels (USA MHFW) October 31, 2015, in the Nation’s Capital. As USA MHFW her duties are to advocate for people with disabilities throughout the USA and afar, while empowering and inspiring others to excel in their lives. Being inclusive of community events, such as annual parades… will enable her to fulfill some of her duties. Talathia was denied the opportunity to be a part of this year’s parade; the reason given was the organizers of the Novant’s parade do not recognize pageant participants; yet Miss NC and Miss SC will be, and has always been allowed to take part in this annual community event.
USA MHFW, Inc. is a nonprofit organization; the reigning queen represents all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Talathia is a native of Charlotte, NC, and North Carolinian's should be proud of her, as we all are.
The reason given is unacceptable! Parades are community events and USA MHFW, Inc. believe that all people in the community should be able to represent their individual communities, i.e. the Disability Community – to be direct. Furthermore, we believe Talathia’s presence would inspire other women 100% dependent of a wheelchair for mobility – to continue pursuing their dreams. Talathia has overcome her many challenges as a woman with a disability, and she defies the odds by modeling, running her own non-profit organization for individuals who suffer from stroke and epilepsy.
We believe by giving the crowed a glimpse of hope will display the message… they too can hold on to a dream.
Please support her being accepted as a part of the parade and let’s celebrate all citizens of our city and their achievements.
Thank you,
USA MHFW, Inc.
Ps. A community that lack diversity and inclusion will remain divided… Until its decision makers embrace, promote, and welcome change.
