Jenks Residents: URGENT! Join your neighbors in preventing a bad decision by the City!
The Issue
On May 16th, the seven Jenks City Councilors will be voting to change the land use designation on 5 acres of land ( east side of Elm , and north of 106th Street) from “Open Spaces & Parks” to “Local Commercial”. This seemingly simple change on the small acreage gives for the developers the instant ability to build a 100 room hotel, fast food restaurants, along with retail and almost 250 parking spaces. This development is part of a broader plan of what has been presented as a larger, commercial baseball complex that will draw thousands of people daily, into this already congested street which will be accessed by only one entrance at the intersection when it opens.
As it is now, the infrastructure of the Jenks streets cannot accommodate the needs of current residents, who live south of the Turnpike. The Simon Outlet Mall is already expected to bring in over 4 million visitors annually, entering and exiting the mall through various I-75 exits, in addition to the Creek Turnpike. Adding a large tourist development at 106th & Elm will no doubt create greater traffic and safety concerns for our children, the dog walkers, and bikers along the city trails and nearby residential roads.
Hundreds of citizens of Jenks showed up to the April 20th Planning Commission hearing and requested a 60 day delay. It was quickly denied. The Planning Commission voted 4-3 to approve the recommendation of the land use change which is now in the hands of the City Council. We need to ask the City Council to not make the same error by voting on a land use change without investigating the concerns presented by the community and taking more time to listen to its constituents.
Please sign this petition and please pass it along to your Jenks neighbors and friends! We can make a difference together!
