Turning lane at Wilkes Central and Moravian Falls Elementary

The Issue

The community of Moravian Falls Elementary School and Wilkes Central High School are in desperate need of a turning lane for the entrances of the schools. Both schools are located on Hwy 18 in Moravian Falls. Highway 18 is a two lane road. In the past, parents that were traveling to and from school with their students have pulled over on the shoulder of the road to allow through traffic to continue on their way. This through traffic also includes busses headed to the school with children. Traditionally, pulling off the shoulder of the road has worked in the past. However, this year there are a couple of property owners near the elementary school that have taken issue with the traffic that has pulled off of the shoulder of the road because the cars are touching the grass, although it is the state’s right of way. There have been boulders place two to three feet from the shoulder of the road, cones, as well as some sort of fiberglass/metal combo poles along the shoulder as well. The DOT moved the boulders back, however there are still rods and cones on the shoulder in the state’s right of way.  All of this could easily be resolved if the department of transportation could put turning lane into both of the schools. This would resolve the right away issues with the property owners, as well as ensuring the safety of the students coming to and from school, and would assist with the through traffic that is traveling Highway 18 in the mornings and afternoon. Your support for this project would ensure that it could be moved up to a top priority with the DOT.  It would also ensure the safety of our children  as well as the community’s.
