amber menendez started this petition to Superintendent JEFFERSON PARISH PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD

Jefferson Parish School board altered the start times of early elementary schools for the 2020-2021 school year. The announcement of the change was made the last day of school for the 2019-2020 school year. Some schools are starting over an hour earlier. My sons school started at 8:30 and is now starting at 7:20 with drop off starting at 6:50 AM! He is 5 years old! In my opinion it is unreasonable to have children as young as 4 years old getting up at 5:30 am or earlier depending on their location to get to school or the bus. If my son continues to take the bus we will probably be waiting for the bus in the dark, especially in the winter. Jefferson Parish School Board made the change stating research shows high school student excel with more sleep. Everyone excels with more sleep. Young minds are more malleable and need to be well rested and alert to take in all of the educational information.

Jefferson Parish School Board stated they made the change based on research and parents input. There was a survey sent out to parents in February but it did not contain questions pertaining to the start of the school day. It contained questions regarding the start and end of the school year as well as Holiday breaks. I also couldn't find any info regarding the change in Dr. Brumley's 2020 Infrastructure and Efficiency plan he proposed.

With the start of the day for early elementary students as young as 4 years old to 10 years old at 5:30 am there will be more behavioral issues as well as academic issues. Students will be over tired in already maxed out classrooms. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine studies show students in this age range need approx. on average 10 - 13 hours of sleep. It also puts added stress on the working families in the evenings getting home after work, picking up students from school, making dinner, doing homework and getting to bed at a reasonable time to get ready for the next school day at 5:30 am. Not only the added stress if families have multiple students in different schools.

Please join me in advocating for our early elementary students of the future! We have to change these early school times for our children! Healthy, rested children will learn better at any age. Just because they are young doesn't mean they don't have a voice. Help me stand up for our young, learning children!
