The State of Alabama wrongfully convicted Darryle Shields!

The Issue

At the age of 16, Darryle Shields was with his uncle, Brandon, who was 17 years old. While the two were together, Brandon shot a woman in the back of the head to Darryle's utter shock and trauma; he did not know that this was going to happen. Innocent of murder, he then trusted the police and prosecution. His attorney encouraged such cooperation, as well as a guilty plea to murder. Years later, Darryle sits in prison without ever having exercised his right to have a jury consider whether he could be held responsible for an act he neither anticipated, nor recovered from. At the scene eyewitnesses and law enforcement officials noted Darryle's trauma and disorientation over the act he had just witnessed. The system took a 16-year-old witness to a murder and recasted him as an actual murderer. As he prepares to seek judicial relief from the constitutional violations that made this outcome possible, those who believe in justice must hold the government responsible. Darryle is entitled to his day in court so that his legitimate legal claims are considered to determine if his present incarceration is wrongful.
