EQUITY for ALL, RESIDENTS, SMBIZ, SCHOOL FAMILIES SAVE zoning draft SUNSET BLVD Corridor 5
The Issue
WHO WE ARE**A diverse, inclusive, compassionate, residential community on the west border of Hollywood. Housed and unhoused [with 2 homeless facilities], as well as ALL ethnicities, ALL orientations, ALL ages, and ALL income levels. Let us repeat, ALL.
Our homes run the gamut from low-scale apartments, ADUs, bungalow courts, and bridge & motel residential housing shelters* to historic structures, both residential and commercial, some dating from the original 1800s cattle and fruit ranch structures 150+ years ago.
This varied residential community wraps around a 9 block commercial strip from Fairfax Ave. to Vista St., along Sunset Blvd. (referred to as Corridor 5 of CPIO/current draft), home to scores of unique, independent, small businesses, some dating from the early 1900s.
Our frontage is shallow and directly abuts R1 lots, a Title 1 school, and low scale apartment buildings of affordable housing. Commercial buildings on Sunset Blvd. also include multiple affordable second-floor housing units above businesses.
*We have bridge housing in our community because our residents enthusiastically sought and supported its inclusion AND we have Michael’s Village, a residential hotel for the unhoused, on our eastern border. We are tired of the offensive, inaccurate stereotyping - depicting our multi-ethnic residents as predominantly wealthy and white - shared at the City Planning Commission hearing of 2.18.21 and apparently condoned by the office of District 4 Council member Nithya Raman.
**WHAT WE WANT** To retain the current draft of the CPIO (Corridor 5) along Sunset Blvd. It reflects 12 years of community collaboration of our residents, business owners and school families. As a result of this collaboration, we have created a zoning plan which enhances, protects and provides EQUITY for:
• ALL of our residents, housed and unhoused
• Our small businesses
• Our Title 1 school
• Our current affordable housing sprinkled on every block along this corridor
But, if the intent is the demolition of our 100+ year old commercial strip, it must be allowed only for 100% Affordable Housing on scale with the current residential community. Nothing less.
