The Issue
This building will stretch over 1,300 feet tall, yet have a base only 60 feet wide, rising like an unstable pencil over a densely packed Manhattan neighborhood. Further, the developers are trying to build these high-cost, luxury apartments as cheaply as possible using a subcontractor with a history of workplace safety violations and ties to organized crime.
Even worse, just two months ago, a young worker named Rodalfo Vasquez-Galian was crushed to death at one of Park Side’s job sites in New York, leading to work being stopped indefinitely to prevent further injury and death. As you are aware, worker deaths are an avoidable tragedy at job sites like this, where non-union workers are wrongly put into situations without adequate training, monitoring or safety equipment. Mr. Vasquez-Galian’s death is part of a disturbing trend of increased deaths and injuries of Latino workers hired by non-union contractors for the most dangerous jobs on construction sites.
