Environmental toxins are extremely dangerous. An example of an environmental toxin, is the Monsanto based popular product Roundup Weed Killer. Harmful Monsanto based products are banned in many places in the United States and around the world. Within my home state of Washington, Roundup is a popular choice to kill weeds in both agricultural and non agricultural settings. Roundup contains Glyphosate, which is widely used for larger scale or commercially produced produce. Environmental toxins like Roundup are harming/killing our neighbors and family members, creating unhealthy air, water, soil and poisoning our produce. There's a much more logical, safer way to manage weeds than spraying proven toxic chemicals everywhere. Monsanto is a huge corporation that doesn't care about the long term effects of its products. Roundup and Glyphosate products kill natural pollinators (bees and butterflies), disrupt beneficial insects in the predator to prey dynamic of crop damaging pests, harm aquatic life and streams through runoff, all while creating less nutrient soil and crop biodiversity. Monsanto negatively impacts our independent farmers as well by putting genetically modified patent traits on seeds. Farmers who purchase Monsanto seeds have to sign technology agreements that creates a limit to their ability to save or replant. With a lack of replanting, a full circle moment of feeling dependent on Roundup to manage weeds occurs. Monsanto has been known to sue farmers for infringement when patented genes are found in crops, which can unintentionally happen through cross pollination! Glyphosate is carcinogenic, especially in constant exposure. It can cause numerous types of deadly cancers along with, GI problems, flu like allergic reactions, reproductive harm in both men and women (fertility issues, birth defects etc), gluten intolerance, or death. Yet labeled as safe by the EPA. That statement of these products being safe is not only false, but helps consumers poison their community without knowing it. Multiple sources, including The University of Washington, have proved the horrible effects Glyphosate and Roundup is known to cause. This is basically the modern version of DDTS silent spring, only even worse. Roundup and Glyphosate based products are created to form a cocktail of toxic ingredients. After over exposure, my family and I have endured the unnecessary wrath of these environmental toxins. My father was diagnosed with a rare type of Leukemia, which was confirmed environmental after multiple oncology tests due to exposure to Roundup. I watched too many local names of families come in and out of cancer centers. I've seen my graduate class of 2018 high school classmates either die, lose limbs or suffer due to cancer. There is a correlation, especially since those that are diagnosed or die from cancer is not from a deemed genetic cause. Washington is showing a skyrocketing positive increase of cancer as well. I am a student in the healthcare field wishing to ban the usage of Roundup, and Glyphosate based environmental toxins. Environmental toxins are not contributing to the health and wellbeing of Washington. I promise you, there are better and safer ways to manage weeds. Please help me create a healthier community!
