Execute your authority as governor to declare an immediate, statewide emergency ban on use of consumer fireworks

Execute your authority as governor to declare an immediate, statewide emergency ban on use of consumer fireworks

The Issue

  1. Fire hazard throughout our state is unprecedented due to drought, hot weather, climate change and tinder-dry brush. “The fire danger now is unlike any we’ve seen in a long time, if ever. We need to be prepared for the possibility of an unprecedented fire season.” Governor Inslee

  2. The same level and degree of precautions should be taken for densely-populated urban areas as for largely unpopulated DNR forest land.
  3. Urban areas are already experiencing fireworks induced fires.
  4. Residents have been encouraged to attend professional shows, yet most residents cannot leave their homes due to fear of fire caused by neighbors: “Fireworks, while often part of our Fourth of July celebration, pose an increased risk with the extremely dry conditions we’re experiencing this year. We’re strongly urging people to not use them this year and celebrate in a different way.” Governor Inslee

  5. A statewide ban will make enforcement much easier for local police and fire departments this 4th of July as well as the weeks surrounding it.
  6. Fireworks stands may lose a little business, and revelers may need to change their plans, but these consequences pale in comparison to the potential loss of life, limb and property if no declaration is made.
  7. Residents in White Center and West Hill have expressed their fears in this rapidly-growing petition. They are counting on you, Gov. Inslee, to protect their safety.
  8. If there is no statewide fireworks ban under current known conditions, and there is a major tragedy in urban areas, residents will hold our governor liable and responsible.
