Return Java House's Minimum Wage to $10.10 and Support Unionization

The Issue

As citizens of Iowa City may already be aware, the Java House chain has an infamous history in the community of worker abuses ranging from general poor treatment to alleged illegal firings and tip theft. Most recently, Java House owners have cut wages  from $10.10 to $8.75 over the course of the pandemic, citing decrease in revenue due to the lock down.

Since the lock down ended, Java House workers in Iowa City have reported a steady increase in patrons nearing the pre-pandemic standard. Despite this, when asked, upper management has declined to return wages back to $10.10.

We, as fellow workers and members of the community, demand that Java House return wages from $8.75 back to $10.10. We can not stand by and let businesses repeatedly mistreat and exploit their workers for the sake of their own financial gain.

If workers within Java House should use this as an opportunity to utilize their legal right to organize themselves into a union (NLR Act Section 7) then Java House owners must not take any punitive action against them. The Eastern Iowa IWW adamantly encourages Java House workers to unionize, and we are prepared to support any measures they take if they choose to do so.

We, and the rest of the community, will be paying attention to the actions of Java House's owners. Do right by your workers.
