Keep Alberta Recreation Centres and Pools OPEN
The Issue
Physical activity , health and wellness is the key to children’s mental health during this ongoing pandemic. The closure of such facilities would cause a great amount distress on kids involved with different sports and other organizations that are based out of these types of facilities. Sports and recreation , physical activity , dance , swimming , hockey and soccer etc are all key elements to keeping our children happy , healthy and safe. Since the reopening of pools 282,000 swimmers have returned to the pool , returned to their swim clubs successfully without any incident of transmission of COVID-19, all these facilities and their clubs have gone to great lengths to take proper measures to keep participants at these recreation centres safe and healthy. The people that work in these facilities cannot afford to be without work once again ,the coaches also cannot afford to be without work once again , more IMPORTANTLY these Coaches need the children just as much as these children need their coaches. Our children cannot continue to have things they love , that keep them healthy and sane taken away from them at any given moments notice they need consistency they need assurance and they need to feel and be a part of something that’s important to them. Recent statements from Dr. Hinshaw herself have stated that the rise in cases are due to large social gatherings , people going out when they are unwell and people not waiting for test results the rise in cases has not been linked to swimming , soccer , hockey or kids doing sports , doing what they love and that is because these facilities have taken great precaution to keep everyone safe ,healthy and happy and keep our children productive and more importantly mentally well. I urge you to please not shut down any type of Recreation Centre. Swimmers are in chemically treated water !! , it is a non contact sport that can also maintain social distance. Let’s not target shut downs on places that are not an issue let’s continue allowing our children to thrive to grow and to be mentally happy and safe.
