Genevieve Brucker started this petition to Governor Jared Polis and

Colorado Department of Corrections inmates are truly serving "hard time" during this pandemic. Due to the restrictions in place pursuant to public health orders, all CDOC facilities (including minimum, medium, and maximum security facilities) have not allowed in-person visitation since early March 2020. The educational and vocational programs that would normally be available within individual correctional facilities have also been shut down since early March 2020. Some facilities have even gone on extended facility-wide lockdowns (in some cases, longer than 14 days) after staff or inmates have tested positive for COVID-19.

Inmates serving time during the pandemic - and on into the future as long as the public health orders prohibiting visitation remain in place - should be granted extra "good" time and/or time served on their sentence, as they are currently serving their sentences in maximum lockdown, no matter what the security level of the facility and no matter what crime they were sentenced for. Perhaps the State would see it fit to double the time served for any deserving inmates incarcerated during the period from March 2020 and going forward, or at least provide some sort of meaningful benefit to those who are incarcerated.

We have all had a difficult 2020. Imagine being in prison during this time and not having any physical contact or in-person visitation with your loved ones for nearly a year now. Imagine the mothers and fathers who have lost all physical connection with their children. Imagine the families and lives torn apart. Imagine not being able to hug your spouse or hold their hand for nearly a year.

My fiancee is currently incarcerated in the Colorado Department of Corrections, serving a 4-year sentence since January 2020 on a felony assault charge that stemmed from an incident where he was attacked by someone in a bar bathroom in April 2018 and he defended himself. Due to his prior criminal record from over a decade ago, he faced a harsh sentence if convicted of felony assault due to the state trying to classify him as an habitual felon. He opted for a 4-year deal rather than risk a conviction and what could become a 48-year sentence. I have not seen him or touched him since March 2020. My heart hurts to think of all the inmates whose lives and well-being are in shambles, not only because they are incarcerated, but because of this prolonged separation from their loved ones they have had to endure because of this unprecedented time we are living in.

Please sign this Petition in hopes that we can make a change, and that deserving inmates will be granted more time served during the pandemic.
