The 10th of November 2020, marked the 25th anniversary since the execution of nine Nigerians who protested against Shell for wanting to destroy their homes. Ken Saro Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders, were hanged by the Nigerian state after they spoke out against the government and campaigned against Shell’s operations in Nigeria’s Ogoniland.

Decade's later and the Niger delta is still ransacked by the destruction caused by Shell's work in the region. The water and soil are poisoned with carcinogenic chemicals leaving the Ogoni people facing devastating health risks. Shell is one of the world's 10 largest corporations by revenue, and has assets of more than 400 billion dollars. However, since the multiple oil spills in Ogoniland, only 11% of the total contaminated areas have started to be cleaned up, with none of these areas actually completed.

In 2009, Shell agreed to pay $15.5m (£9.6m) in settlement of a legal action in which they were accused of having collaborated in the execution of nine leaders of the Ogoni tribe of southern Nigeria. During the lawsuit, families of the Ogoni nine alleged Shell conspired with the military government to capture and hang the men. Shell was also accused of a series of other alleged human rights violations, including working alongside the army to bring about killings and torture of Ogoni protesters.
Shell was also accused of providing the Nigerian army with vehicles, patrol boats and ammunition, as well as helping to plan raids and terror campaigns against villages.

Supporters of the legal action said the fact that Shell walked away from the trial suggested the company had been anxious about the evidence that would have been presented had it gone ahead.

Among the documents lodged with the New York court was a 1994 letter from Shell in which it agreed to pay a unit of the Nigerian army for services rendered. The unit had retrieved one of the company's fire trucks from the village of Korokoro – an action that according to reports at the time left one Ogoni man dead and two wounded.

This is why we are asking today, for Jamie Oliver to cease trading with Shell and to remove his products from their deli range. Their damage in the Niger Delta, is a small fraction of their destruction across the world. We have respect for Jamie Oliver and the ethical work he has done throughout the years, we do not believe therefore that he would agree with Shell's actions and be proud of having his name alongside theirs.
