The Issue

TOXIC WASTE? Not in our backyard! See where to send your comments below: Within 48 hours of passing the historic Fayette Co Ban/Ordinance against toxic waste disposal due to elevated cancer rates and community water contamination risk, the WVDEP opened up a public comment period to dump the toxic waste in Raleigh Co., next door. The people of Raleigh Co. intend to ban this toxic waste in our county too. If you can't make the public hearing in Glen Daniel on an application for the renewal of a Class II underground injection control (UIC) permit for a facility in Trap Hill in Raleigh County, then you can mail  in comments to an address provided below or email comments to the email provided below.  The applicant is Base Petroleum Inc. of South Charleston. The Trap Hill facility consists of one commercial well where fluids associated with oil and natural gas production are injected. If approved, the permit (draft permit number 2D0810281) would be valid for five years. "A study, “Endocrine Disrupting Activities of Surface Water Associated with a West Virginia Oil and Gas Industry Wastewater Disposal Site” was published online in the peer-reviewed journal Science of the Total Environment. It looked at water samples collected from a site near Fayetteville. The report indicates that water downstream from the injection well site had significantly more endocrine disrupting activity than water upstream. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with hormone systems in mammals, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The report shows these disruptors were found above levels known to result in adverse health effects. Fayette County recently banned wastewater injection wells in response to years of contention surrounding this particular site."
