More frequent and intense hurricanes, floods, and tsunamis, inundated homes and submerged streets, and the loss of ecosystem habitats and physical coastlines are expected as human-induced climate change worsens. “Since 1975 there has been a substantial and observable regional and global increase in the proportion of Cat 4-5 hurricanes of 25-30 percent per °C of anthropogenic (human-caused) global warming” (Berardelli). Coastal communities are in danger from the changing climate, because they will experience first hand the loss of land, jobs, property, native species, and human life from more frequent and intense coastal disasters. We saw the worst of climate change when hurricane Ike hit. 

     However, we have options and so do our kids. It is our kids who will face the worst of climate change. We as a community, Galveston residents and others, can take initiative. Let's help our kids and future generations. A cheap solution that will protect our city: every year 5th graders in Earth Science class will plant a black mangrove tree along the Galveston coastline after learning about climate change. Our kids not only need to understand the effects of climate change, but understand they can help solve the problems surrounding it. Sign this petition, and together we can protect our children from the worsening effects of climate change.
